Joe (Penn Badgley) is back for more fucked up fantasies, this time in London. Or, the show’s own fantasy of London—Joe, now Jonathan, is a professor who can somehow afford an eye-wateringly expensive place in South Kensington, where everyone is overly foppish with a range of questionable accents. He’s trying to make a fresh start, to prove he’s not a murderous stalker—we’ve all heard that before—but his past just won’t stay buried. Because this time, love, Joe is the one being stalked.
You S4 Part 1 is a whodunit with big, seemingly-predictable twists that hide a bigger mystery: Who is after Joe and what do they want? When people in Joe’s new circle start winding up dead, he’s up against the most formidable foe yet, trying to play catch-up to someone seemingly two steps ahead. It’s thoroughly enjoyable to watch the show set up all the chess pieces of Joe’s new life, ready to sweep the board and smash everything you think you know about it. You might really be going off the deep end this time—and yet you won’t be able to stop yourself from diving headfirst, for better or for worse.
You returns to Netflix on Thursday.
