Nic (Daisy May Cooper) is trapped in a loveless marriage while secretly grieving the man she had an affair with. She’s also the mother to a young disabled boy named Ollie (Lenny Rush) and she struggles to connect with the other mums at his school. That is, until she meets Jen (Selin Hizli), a mum who takes a special interest in Nic and they immediately bond a little too much.
To reveal any more about the plot of this series would be to ruin the wickedly twisted delight you’ll feel at each new revelation. These characters have more secrets than empty wine bottles and the show has a lot of fun leading you down the garden path with them.
Daisy May Cooper is excellent as our unreliable narrator Nic—the grief and the booze and the poor decision-making skills make Nic into one helluva hot mess and she totally owns it (the parts of her she’s willing to admit to, anyway). And Selin Hizli is a great antagonist as Jen, a friend who reaches out to Nic and tries to pull her out of the pit of her loneliness—even if she has less-than-noble reasons for doing so.
But the standout comedy comes from Lenny Rush as Ollie, he is highly engaging with excellent delivery; I can’t wait to see what he does next. Every character in this series is quirky and distinctive, piling on the dry British humor to make you giggle even at the mundanity of everyday conversation.
While Am I Being Unreasonable? is a comedy-thriller, the series has some deeply moving layers, particularly in its exploration of grief. You’ll feel sad for the characters who are stuck in an endless cycle of hurting themselves and each other, knowing they aren’t ready to deal with their problems. None of them are all that likeable but you’ll still find yourself rooting for them—or at least rooting for some answers.
The tone is offbeat and unsettling but that only contrasts with the dark comedy the cast brings to the screen. If you’re looking for something a little bit twisted, Am I Being Unreasonable? is a hugely enjoyable Sunday night binge-watch—like an accident waiting to happen, you won’t be able to look away.
