Blue Eye Samurai sliced open my chest and ran away with my heart ever since it dropped last month. The stunning tale of a ferocious woman warrior on a quest for revenge, set against the epic backdrop of Edo-period Japan. The animation and storytelling are simply captivating, while the fight scenes are gorgeously violent, popping off the screen with a fierce intensity.
To deepen that love for this stunning series, Netflix has released the sixth episode, “All Evil Dreams & Angry Words”, in black and white, which you can watch in full on YouTube.
It’s a testament to how well the art is designed that removing its colors doesn’t detract from the thrall of the episode; it only serves to make the story more dramatic. Without those splashes of color, you’re reliant on the light and shadow to truly appreciate the cinematography. And when they do add a rare flash of color, it’s used to devastating effect. The result is gorgeous, and well worth a watch if you, like me, loved the series on Netflix.
