We have some intriguing news from the world of daytime drama. CBS has announced a new series called The Gates, set to debut in January 2025. What makes this news particularly noteworthy? Well, this will be the first Black-led daytime soap since NBC’s Generations, which aired back in 1989. Black people have always had a loving relationship with daytime drama, so it’s nice to see a show that’s dedicated to soapy thrills with the culture in mind.
The Gates will provide a glimpse into the lives of a wealthy Black family residing in an upscale gated community. The person entrusted with bringing this story to life is Michele Val Jean. Known for her work on The Bold & The Beautiful and General Hospital, Val Jean has penned over 2,000 episodes of daytime drama during her career. She’ll be serving as both the writer and the showrunner for The Gates.
Joining her in the executive producer’s chair are Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, and Kimberly Doebereiner. The series is a result of a joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP, with additional production support from P&G Studios.
While this partnership aims to bring diverse voices to the fore and increase visibility of Black artists, remember, it’s still early days. The specific launch date and time slot for The Gates are yet to be announced. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more details on this one. Here’s hoping The Gates will bring something fresh and scandalous to the daytime drama landscape.
