‘Blood at the Root’ – Magic on the Page

Hi, I’m Malachi and I just read this great book called Blood At The Root by LaDarrion Williams. It’s like super, super interesting cause it’s about magic. So, if you like wizards and magic spells and magic schools, this is definitely for you. The main character is Malik.

I really like the name cause It’s close to Malachi. And no, I’m not biased at all. Totally not. And Malik is black like me. A little older, but still. Anyway, when Malik was seven, his powers showed up, but his mom disappeared. Is she dead? No one knows. Malik can’t remember anything from that night. And after years of moving from foster home to foster home, he’s 17, sad, and angry. Malik knows he has magic, though, he doesn’t know why it’s so powerful. Maybe it’s his anger.

He’s got a foster father who’s really mean and treats him and his brother, Tae, really bad. He tries to use his powers to get Tae out and things get pretty sticky. It’s a really good book, but that ending! Cliffhangers just drive me crazy. I’d say the book is a fantasy mystery novel because it’s magic, but it’s also a mystery because he’s trying to figure out what happened to his mom and what’s up with his powers.

“One day you gonna be able to do great things. There’s a power in you so big, you’re gonna change the world… What you have inside ya, they gonna try to take it away, because they scared.”

Blood at the Root by LaDarrion Williams

I like that quote because it can be applied to more than just this character in this book. There’s power in knowledge. And if you’re smart and black, there’s going to be a lot of people in life that will try and minimize your intelligence or take your power away. Don’t let them. I highly recommend this book because it’s really interesting. And look, fair warning, there’s some mature scenes in the book, but I’m sure y’all could handle it though.

My rating is eight out of ten fireballs!
