A Freakier ‘WEDNESDAY’ – Season 2 Part 2 Gets Flipped Turned Upside Down

Just when we thought Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) had outwitted every monster, outcast, and secret society at Nevermore Academy, Season 2 Part 2 of WEDNESDAY left us dangling from the spires—literally. Our favorite gothic sleuth, stripped of her psychic powers and betrayed by her heart, was last seen bloodied and unconscious on the moonlit cobblestones, courtesy of a rampaging Hyde. Yes, Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is free and more unhinged than ever. With the sinister LOIS project exposed, family secrets unearthed, and the true villain—Judi Stonehurst (Heather Matarazzo)—still at large, Nevermore’s halls are echoing with unanswered questions and a fresh round of danger.

As WEDNESDAY S2 barrels into its conclusion on Wednesday, Sep 3, fans of supernatural YA drama, gothic stylings, and viral dance moments are bracing for a comeback that threatens more twists, more betrayal, and—if Wednesday has her way—a smackdown that will leave even the shadows trembling. Will Wednesday reclaim her powers, unmask her aunt’s fate, save Enid (Emma Myers), get her mama off her back, and outsmart the monsters lurking in plain sight? Only one Thing is certain: At Nevermore, the real mystery is mysteries; they’re complicated, and you might lose your brains.

On her nearly departed deathbed, Wednesday gets a new spirit guide. It’s Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie), her 13th cousin, twice removed. With a wink at Addams Family Values, S2 P2 could make Dominic Toretto smile. It’s all about family. Several families—the Addams, the Stonehursts, the Barclays, and some other unexpected families by blood and by choice—and they’re all feuding.

Bianca (Joy Sunday) has her cult problems, and hiding her mom from her stepfather, Gideon (Caspar Van Dien), is getting complicated. Good thing she has Ajax (Georgie Farmer) to help out with her covert ops. Enid is having werewolf issues, but Billie Piper’s Ms. Capri is there to help. It’s so nice to have a teacher who isn’t problematic (at least not yet). With Slurp the Zombie (Owen Painter) on the loose—alongside Patient 1938 (Frances O’Conner) and Tyler—Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) is feeling guilt…oh no, not young Puggies. There’s no guilt. In his mind, Slurp is his one true friend, and Pugsley just wants to reestablish that connection. Silly boy.

Wednesday’s number one stan, Agnes (Evie Templeton), is still trying too hard, but maybe our clingy invisible girl will find the right way to be seen one day soon. Speaking of trying too hard, Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) are desperately seeking to revive their connections to their children. Gomez with Pugs, and Morticia with Wednesday. It’s not a spoiler to tell you Pugsley is the easier prey. Apparently, Tish is struggling with both sides of the mother x daughter equation, ‘cause Mamma (Joanna Lumley) isn’t loving up on her either—in the words of Enid, “she can be a lot.” Tyler the Hyde is on the run, and since his “master” is dead, this boy’s head is full of chaotic thoughts and hallucinations.

And what about the girl who’s perpetually trying to get over the hump? Wednesday is on a quest to save Enid, while dodging Tyler’s vengeance. That means she’ll need her psychic powers back. Too bad she refuses to listen to Weems or Morticia or Thing or Reason—oops sorry, that’s reason with a small r. Anyway, Wednesday’s innate arrogance and refusal to listen to anyone or any-Thing leads her to thoroughly flummoxing herself and the bestie (and flummox isn’t the f-word I wanted).

One for the fans? Ortega and Myers have a lot of fun in Episode 6, where secrets and lies wither in light of the sun (and what we thought was hyperbole turns out to be true). Bruno (Noah B. Taylor), you’re in danger, boy. Morticia, you spicy, girl. Oh, and look out for the hilarious self-help group that won’t cost you an arm or a leg.

After watching episodes 5–7, I was right about season 2 when I said, “…it’s about to get better by getting so much worse.” The woe comes in multitudes, but so does the character growth. And if you’re searching for a new WEDNESDAY viral moment, there’s more than one dance to choose from as things get “flipped turned upside down,” and other references—including Frankenstein and Día de Muertos—come out to play for a very freaky WEDNESDAY.

I can’t rate it yet because I haven’t seen the finale, but Part 2 redeems the flaws in the first half. So I’ve got my plasma-flavored popcorn ready to watch when you are.

  • Noah B. Taylor: Bruno, live and direct from the Philippines, this new member of the wolf pack has Enid on lock—lip lock (no, I’m not sorry).

  • Patient 1938: The mysterious and very scary escapee from the LOIS project (Long-Term Outcast Integration Study). Who is she? Some say she’s Ophelia Frump, some think she’s Francoise Galpin, and others reference 1938 as the year the Addams Family comic strip debuted. Some of you are right…but no spoilers, darlings
