Episode Appetizer: Will Trent “Why Is Jack’s Arm Bleeding?”

Can we start with a confession? Will and Angie are back on their breakup-to-make-up rotation, and honestly: I prefer the friendship. Every time they start body-rocking, I get uncomfortable with the codependent dysfunction of it all. Yes, this is me flying the friendship flag. Perhaps, new loves would be more fulfilling for us and them.

Speaking of found family, “Why Is Jack’s Arm Bleeding?” is about family lost and found. For Faith and Will, it’s the case of a missing young woman whose body turns up thirteen years later. Faith has an emotional connection because too many Black girls go missing with barely any effort expended to find them. For Angie and Ormewood, the chosen family is a military one, when a former soldier dies on a shooting range after he and his veteran friends go a bender.

On the personal side, Will gets closer to his newly found Uncle Antonio, while he unravels the clues to a traumatic event from his childhood. Bit by bit the death of the foster mother Will wanted to grow up with comes into focus. As a parallel, Amanda goes full auntie in supporting Faith. Meanwhile, Angie and Ormewood interact with people they’ve saved and the responsibilities that come with it.

“Why Is Jack’s Arm Bleeding?” sees each character take on their heroic sides, working within the flaws and limitations of being real people. The past is often a stumbling block for them but they use what they’ve learned to build a better present for as many people as possible. And through those actions, they have a shot at healing themselves. Episode 208 doesn’t have the humor of past episodes, instead, it explores the psychology of disappointment and opportunities for redemption. “Why Is Jack’s Arm Bleeding?” is a chest thumper that puts compassion and the ramifications of good deeds out front.
