2024 Film Chat, ‘Wicked’

Sherin and Julian are joined by special guest host and fellow critic Tim Gordon to dive into their top movie picks of 2024—and also some of the problems with the industry. Sherin is then joined by her sister-friend Erika and her goddaughter Anna to talk all things Wicked!

Superfan Groups + The State of the Movie Industry
We’ve discussed this briefly on the show before but now Sherin, Julian, and Tim get into how they feel about Hollywood studios using superfan groups to tailor their movies. With the glut of constant content, sequels, and remakes, they discuss the way the entertainment industry has been prioritizing quantity over quality. How can Hollywood get people back into theaters? What can studios learn from big “experience” movies like Wicked? How does streaming come into play? Our hosts dissect it all.

Movies of the Year
Sherin, Julian, and Tim go round-robin and share their top movies of 2024—from Dune to Conclave, The Wild Robot to Anora, listen in to hear their top-line choices and wild card picks (and let us know yours). Tim closes out the segment by talking about his time at The Nickel Boys press junket.

Wicked
We already know this segment’s gonna be pop-u-lar, ’cause it’s time to get Wicked. Sherin recently took her fam to a IMAX screening, and she’s joined by her sister-friend Erika and her goddaughter Anna to tell us all about it. Sherin kicks off our trip to Oz with a history lesson, before setting up the movie. The trio talk about the performances and the iconic songs, getting the full IMAX experience, and the practical effects. With Wicked‘s story split into two parts, what are our hosts looking forward to with the second act? What does Wicked mean to them and how do they relate to Elphaba? Make sure to read Sherin’s review while you listen!
