Episode Appetizer: Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms [Episode 1]

Mona-chan has kawaii [unstoppable cuteness] out of control. She lives for that. It’s basically her identity. It’s definitely her last name. Drop the last i and you get Mona Kawai. She’s a self-pronounced queen bee since birth—’cause no one can resist her—but when Mona gets a new classmate, Medaka, he’s impervious to her charms. That rejection makes her brain explode and her exploded brain loses the ability to keep her clothes on and/or dry. I don’t know which one of us is more embarrassed for her, but I’m thinking it’s me [I’m singing “it’s meee” like Elphaba].

Medaka pinches his nose every time Mona tries to seduce him like she’s covered in ‘stank.’ Okay, that’s funny—but she’s so spoiled by her ability to put stars in people’s eyes that she’s clueless and clumsy with her seductions. Luckily, her innocence is a good counterbalance to her refusal to accept Medaka might not like her (even though we know he must have his reasons). Adapted from the manga by Kuze Ran, Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms comes from director Okumura Yoshiaki at studio SynergySP, with series composition by Fudeyasu Kazuyuki.

This is a super cute and sparkly anime but, for me, the premise has more fanservice baked in than romance. Admittedly, I’ve only seen the first episode. If I had mistakenly quit Dan Da Dan after the first episode I would have been mad (IF news of its genius hadn’t reached me). Maybe Medaka Kuroiwa Is Impervious to My Charms blooms into the type of rom-com that’ll make me laugh while I swoon, but after episode one my heart wasn’t in it. The more he resists, the more she tries, and the less interested I am. Especially since fans of Kuze’s manga have revealed the story is heading into harem territory (if only it went the Why Choose? route). Still, I’ll give the series three more episodes. After that, I’ll let you know if my feelings change. Right now, I might be the one who’s impervious to Mona and Medaka’s charms.
