Series Appetizer: Detectives These Days Are Crazy!

Back in the day, Keiichiro Nagumo was a genius detective, solving cases and stealing hearts. But now he’s broken down. Think Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe from The Big Sleep but without the mystique…or clients. But there might be hope for this misbegotten gumshoe in the form of the brash junior detective Nagumo Masahiro, a girl who dreams of becoming a detective, and her dreams might be a way to bring him back to his former glory days. Her youthful energy which at times forces him to be her “older” boyfriend at a kawaii cafe or having her spirit inadvertently take on an entire group of yakuza, Mashiro starts to show the old detective some “new tricks” proving that she’s worthy of being his partner, and that she could change his business for the better.

That is, if they can survive each other.

The premise is not new, but the comedy is classic. With most anime like this, I went in expecting some type heartwarming buddy detective series.  Think, Jake and the Fatman, Zootopia, or even Lethal Weapon. Nah, the animators and writers said, we are giving, silly comedy. Detectives These Days Are Crazy! features a couple of fairly goofy protagonists—the “dirty old man” and the spunky girl whose goes from Zero to Bitchslap in 60 seconds. The silly series include sexy-time(ecchi) jokes, pratfalls, and cross-generation miscommunication humor.

Which is buttressed by the old detective’s back problems and his total lack of knowing anything about the advancements in 21st century tech—like a smartphone! The series gives 90’s – 00s goofy and if you are missing that, this is the series you need. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and expects the audience to do the same—see some 4th wall breaks. It’s the type of series that brings a quick smile to your face watching these two stumble through case after case
