Lightning Recs: Happy’s Place – Season 2 [the first five episodes]

Reba’s back for another round! Happy’s Place reopens its doors for a second season to serve up more Southern Comfort (both the drink and the cozy comedy we know and love). And everyone (well, almost everyone) is rooting for Bobbie (Reba McEntire) to hurry up and get moving with Emmett (Rex Linn)…if secrets don’t get in their way first.

Meanwhile, Gabby (Melissa Peterman) has some lofty plans for the future and wants to keep things in the family. Isabella (Belissa Escobedo) is questioning her life choices, all while still trying to find her place. And as for Steve (Pablo Castelblanco) and Takoda (Tokala Black Elk), well, they’re just trying to keep things running smoothly…especially when the health inspector comes a-knockin’.

Yup, there are plenty of shenanigans and life changes going on, even as the traditional sitcom setup keeps things lighthearted and consistent. The gentle comedy will keep you giggling, especially thanks to our girl Reba who naturally lights up the room with her classic cutesy charm. And the chemistry between Bobbie and Emmett will give you all the feels—even when they don’t know how to act.

With S2, the characters truly feel like family now, which makes room for deeper connections and fun B-plotlines. While the characters remain within their archetypes, they still have arcs that allow them to grow and flourish, moving at a faster pace than most shows of the same genre. It’s refreshing to watch their emotional journeys, but it never feels like too much for a casual viewer to keep up with.

Happy’s Place lightly updates traditional network sitcom tropes for modern times; it eschews outdated stereotypes about love and family and forges new connections in a still familiar way. So if you’re looking for something warm & spirited to settle into, sing it with us now, “You belong at Happy’s Place…”
