Jackie’s (Nikki Rodriguez) family were killed in a tragic accident. With no one in the state to take care of her, she’s forced to leave her privileged New York life behind and move to rural Colorado to live with her mother’s best friend, Katherine (Sarah Rafferty). The house is more than crowded—Katherine and her husband George (Marc Blucas) are raising ten kids—and it’s a far cry from the life Jackie once had.
She seems to be dealing with her traumatic losses better than most, and is trying to stay focused on her goal of attending Princeton. But if she was merely a bookish rich kid, this show wouldn’t have a hook, now would it? As she settles into life in the sticks, she finds herself falling for two of the Walter brothers: Alex (Ashby Gentry), a dependable good guy who shares her smarts; and Cole (Noah LaLonde), a jock with a dark side. Ooh, you know how that goes.
Adapted from the YA novel of the same name by Ali Novak, My Life with the Walter Boys is a paint-by-numbers coming-of-age drama. It feels like it should’ve aired on The CW back in the day with the amount of situational hot messes the characters have to deal with between classes. But a love triangle teen drama is a surefire way to start a ship war, so are you Team Cole or Team Alex?
The acting is decent and the cast do their best with the material, which is a little outdated and stilted but it’s an easy binge-watch. So if you’re looking for something to tide you over in between seasons of Ginny & Georgia and The Summer I Turned Pretty, give My Life with the Walter Boys a try.
