Netflix Unveils First Look at ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Series

Netflix has released a gorgeous first glimpse into its adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s masterwork, One Hundred Years of Solitude. The teaser draws us in with the surreal beauty of Márquez’s prose and takes us straight into the heart of Macondo, a town lost in time and memory.

Aureliano Babilonia, engrossed in Melquiades’ mythical diary, serves as our guide. A haunting image of Colonel Aureliano Buendía before a firing squad, remembering a long-gone afternoon of discovering ice with his father, sets the tone. We then trace the poignant journey of José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, in their pursuit of joy, fleeing a curse that shadows their lineage.

Directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a testament to Latin American filmmaking, brought to life by an ensemble of LATAM talent. Filmed entirely in Spanish and shot in Colombia, the series is a labor of love, made possible by the support of Márquez’s family. Its Netflix debut is set for 2024.

One Hundred Years of Solitude, brought to life in 1967, is a treasure by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. A cornerstone of international literature, the novel has sold over 50 million copies, and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

This adaptation, spanning 16 episodes, showcases a cast led by Claudio Cataño, Jerónimo Barón, and Marco González. The writing team, consisting of José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, María Camila Arias, and Albatrós González, has meticulously crafted this series to honor Márquez’s rich legacy.
