Episode Appetizer: Will Trent “Do You See the Vision”

If you have a high ‘TV IQ’ you’ll know from the start of “Do You See the Vision” that something is about to go wrong. More wrong than the weekly murder and more recent than the wounds of the past. Will and Angie are making new plans by refinishing an old table—a poetic metaphor on several levels; the way furniture represents home, or how a new coat of varnish will never change what’s underneath. The case of the serial killer with the tiny toys takes over the season finale. While Will, Faith, and Ormewood are losing their minds trying to find a clue that will lead to a breakthrough, Angie is healing up at home (aka Will’s house) when she gets a surprise visit from Amanda. As the case gets more and more personal, the relationships are tested, and the ending is shattering. Friends, this one is going to hurt.

Let’s stop for levity, ‘cause you’re going to need it. Some of the best one-liners are “That was my toaster strudel” from Faith and “…your on again, off again, on again lover-brother…” expressed with comedic concern by Franklin (Kevin Daniels).

Other than the jokes, another joy of watching Will Trent is spotting the writers’ references. Shonda Rhimes shows up a lot—like that KABOOM in the first episode of this season; the meaning in the music from “Residente o Visitante” is for the hip-hop fans; and a homage to the final episode of Sex Feet Under is a poignant throwback in this season finale. The downside is that several of those references foreshadow very bad things. The writers of Will Trent are masters at juggling tone, giggles, trauma, and intensity—leading us to dramatic guillotines that we sense but can’t quite predict. Will and Angie making plans for the future, Ormewood as dad-of-the-year, Faith begging Will to let her help him, and girls who need saving—each of these are skillfully set up stepping stones, leading to an impossible decision. If you don’t scream, you haven’t been paying attention.

“Do You See the Vision” is devastating. By the end, we have no idea where any of the characters will end up, but Will is the biggest question mark of all. While watching S2 E10, don’t forget ‘the horse IS relevant’ because you won’t be able to forget anything else.

To the Will Trent Team, hold for applause. You’ve earned it. Can’t wait for season three.
