We’ve been waiting an age for this one. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has finally unveiled its first trailer and it looks gloriously epic. Set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, it tells the tale of the legendary king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand (a name some of you might already recognize from the Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy).
With Jackson and Fran Walsh serving as executive producers, alongside Philippa Boyens as producer, the team behind the original LOTR & Hobbit trilogies is here in force. Our beloved Miranda Otto also returns to reprise her role of Éowyn, and she’s joined by Brian Cox as Helm, Gaia Wise as Héra, and Luke Pasqualino as Wulf. Kenji Kamiyama directs this animated adventure, which will hit theaters worldwide this December.
With such an incredible team behind it, we knew it was going to be magnificent—and the trailer only ups the hype factor. The animation is gorgeous and sets the tone of the film, while the story sucks you right back into Middle-earth. The world-building, the music, and oh those horns! It’s brutal, it’s bloody, it’s something to believe in…

“A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.”
