Lightning Recs: ‘Love on the Spectrum’ – Season 3

One of Netflix’s most heartfelt shows is back and the third time’s a charm. Love on the Spectrum S3 mixes new connections with returning faves to show not just the dating journeys of each person on the autism spectrum, but also their emotional journeys too. Throughout the season, we get to see a lot of firsts: first dates, first kisses, first love. We also get to see how these romantic hopefuls learn how to navigate advocating for themselves within their relationships, which is so refreshing.

The returning couples include Abbey and David, who have been together for four years now and are enjoying every second of it. Dani and Adan have also been together for a while but are facing a big hurdle when it comes to their future; the way their honesty with each other and themselves motivates them this season is really moving. The show also welcomes back Connor, who’s been traveling a lot and looking for love—and this season brings new surprises for him. Fan-favorite James returns to the screen with his superb enthusiasm for the dating pool and he can’t wait to dive back in. And Tanner is going from strength to strength, having moved into a new apartment and staying booked and busy (and you’ll love that for him!).

Newcomer Madison says she joined Love on the Spectrum because she was inspired by others’ success at finding romance, and is hopeful that she’ll meet someone as engaging and lovely as she is. And Pari is excited to find a match that allows her to show off her bubbly personality and hobbies. We’ll also get to meet their dates and watch with delight for sparks to appear or friendship to blossom.

You’ll be smiling the whole way through as the daters experience that rush of nervous excitement from a great date or a tender moment; it’s also really wonderful to watch how they navigate consent so gracefully and sometimes even find their own ways of helping to regulate one another. By following every step of the dating journey, Love on the Spectrum highlights some of the many diverse ways we can love and express ourselves. It’s brilliantly insightful and so comforting to watch in its relatability, moved along by a jaunty score and well-timed editing.

Love on the Spectrum continues to be one of the best docu-reality series around, making sure everyone involved has the space to shine and be truly honest with themselves and each other. And that’s a really rare accomplishment—long may it continue!
