Lightning Recs: Chef’s Table: Noodles

One of Netflix’s strongest culinary series, Chef’s Table returns with more flavorful features. This season focuses on noodles, taking us across continents and cultures to hear from four experts in their craft. Each chef tells their own story, starting with their family and upbringing, which are so often the root of their inspiration. The season beautifully illustrates the powerful connection of food; how recipes are passed down through generations, and how the past informs each new process. How these chefs use cooking as a way of discovering their ancestors and cultures; how they use it to discover themselves.

Chef’s Table: Noodles features Evan Funke who elevates the craft of handmade pasta in LA; Guirong Wei who brings the heart of Shaanxi cuisine to the UK; Peppe Guida who melds Italian tradition with a modern approach to dried pasta; and Nite Yun who honors the legacy of Cambodia’s incredible noodle dishes. The series is a gentle but deeply moving glimpse into their lives and how they keep the art of cooking alive, giving viewers so much more than a taste of the delicious dishes they serve.

Having the chefs narrate adds a layer of intimacy most documentaries strive for; it connects you to their world, their passion, and their creations. Their journeys are marked with highs and heartbreaks, enhanced by an uplifting string-led score that fills the small moments that become the big ones with the glaze of memory. Because when it comes to food, it’s not just how it tastes or even how it makes you feel; it’s an amalgamation of everything that led up to it becoming a beloved dish. And Chef’s Table: Noodles takes us through it all in one of the most captivating seasons yet.

Chef’s Table: Noodles debuts on Netflix on October 2.
