Lightning Recs: Cobra Kai – Season 6, Part 1

Cobra Kai has fought valiantly but it’s getting ready to hang up its gi. We have one last season, coming to Netflix in three parts, to say goodbye to our karate kids. And it’s high time our senseis grew up and reckoned with themselves. Johnny (William Zabka) is preparing for fatherhood and throws himself in head-first with 80s teen movie enthusiasm. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) is on his own journey of discovery; it seems Mr. Miyagi still has some lessons for him. They need all the strength they can muster with the threat of Kreese (Martin Kove) hanging over them (he’s just such a good villain you love to hate).

Our senseis must prepare their students for the ultimate showdown: The world championships of karate, Sekai Taikai in Barcelona. It’s a once-in-a lifetime opportunity and it means taking a hard line approach to train them up—in the form of Barnes (Sean Kanan), a great antagonist to up the stakes for the senseis and the students. Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo) and Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) are looking to their future and thinking about what they want from the college experience. Sam (Mary Mouser) and Tory (Peyton List) are trying to bury the hatchet, even if it means shifting their fighting styles. And Devon (Oona O’Brien) is just trying to get noticed.

Part 1 sets the bar high, making the All Valley tournament look like child’s play. As tensions rise, it brings out the heated showdowns and sparring matches that make this show sing. The heart of the show is front and center, hitting you hard with feelings both good and heartbreaking. By the time Part 1 ends you’ll be chopping your screen in half like a breaking board because you’ll be so keyed up and ready for the next chapter.
