THE MAIN QUESTIONS: A Mother’s Sacrifice and a Hero’s Mission in “A Holy Charge” – Paradise Episode 204

THOMAS DOHERTY with a 'Love Actually' joke in PARADISE - “A Holy Charge”

A new episode of Paradise just dropped, and we have questions. Episode 204: “A Holy Charge” is a shocker, and honestly, it hurts. The apocalypse is not good for anybody. Here are THE MAIN QUESTIONS this week:

Episode 204: “A Holy Charge”

Okay, I thought Annie (Shailene Woodley) had lost her mind. Is that what you thought, too? Our girl redeems herself with her kindness. She and Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) travel to Atlanta because she understands his need for family. Meanwhile, Paradise flashes back to James Marsden’s Dead President and his excitement for the birth of the first bunker baby, contrasting life in this new world and the one Xavier left behind in the bunker.

This shift to a Silo-type world inside the bunker and a familiar but far more friendly post-apocalyptic world on the outside is fascinating. Annie can’t trust anyone, but Xavier can. Funny, because he’s deadly and she is a healer.

Quotes to look out for:
“And sometimes, Annie, it feels like your heart might fucking explode.”

“Apologies for Love Actuallying you. Not sure you have sound on the other side.”

“All our memories, all our stories are from out there. He will be the first person whose entire story will take place here.”

“You can guard against the worst in people while still believing in the best. It’s just remembering we’re all capable of great change, great love, of great promise. It’s a holy charge.”

“It has to be you.”

“You, me, everyone we’ve met, we’re all descended from that same 1,000 people who just happened to survive.”

THE MAIN QUESTIONS:

Why did Annie have to die? Yes, I know it’s a poignant reminder of how often women die in childbirth, but the scattershot hope this series fires at us hurts more than no hope at all. Farewell, Doc. Annie was a great character, and despite her death, I think her character will come into play in big ways. What I love about this episode is the sense of community. The outside world is proving to be more civilized than the bunker. When Annie gives Xavier a “holy charge,” it feels like he’s in the first stages of becoming more than a protagonist—someday soon, Xavier will be our hero. He might just save the world.

Why does Xavier have “Dreams. Or maybe not dreams. Almost like memories of things, but they’re things that haven’t happened,” that include Link (Thomas Doherty)? I have my suspicions, but I’ll wait until you know a little more before I reveal them.

Xavier reaches the radio tower, but why does he immediately start pointing his gun at Gary (Cameron Britton)?
