Netflix saw an opportunity by making American Pie’s Jason Biggs the host of their new American pie baking show (the jokes, ohhh the jokes, I’m trying not to make them). Blue Ribbon Baking Championship brings the state fair to the screen, challenging a group of award-winning pastry chefs to create delicious desserts for a chance to win the ultimate blue ribbon.
The creativity level is sky-high as the bakers use combinations you’d think could never work to put their own delicious spin on classic state fair treats. Biggs is joined by co-host and judge Sandra Lee, along with former White House pastry chef Bill Yosses and award-winning artisan baker Bryan Ford, who add their flavorful takes on the taste and execution of each delicacy. The hosts and judges have good chemistry and keep each episode moving gently along with lighthearted humor—don’t worry, no truly stressful moments here (unless you count how hungry you’re gonna get while watching).
Blue Ribbon Baking Championship is a sweet and fluffy series where the competition is top-level but always encouraging, interweaving the stories behind each baker’s choice. It’s nothing groundbreaking but still a decent addition to the cozy cooking show genre that might even give you some ideas for your own summer plans.
