Lightning Recs: ‘Chef’s Table: Legends’

It’s been a decade since Chef’s Table first debuted on Netflix, bringing us sizzling sumptuous flavors served up by renowned culinary stars from around the world. To celebrate, the new Legends installment spotlights four celebrity chefs who’ve helped to shape the future of cuisine.

First up is Jamie Oliver, who rose to fame as “The Naked Chef” in 90s Britain before tackling school dinners across the country to campaign for healthier food and increase food education. Next comes José Andrés, a master of Spanish cuisine who wants to do more than just share the food from his own kitchen; he created a movement to “feed the few and the many.”

We then meet America’s celebrated chef with the most Michelin stars, Thomas Keller; his skills have upped the fine dining game and set new culinary standards to inspire generations of chefs. And finally, the series showcases Alice Waters, who carved out a name for herself with American farm-to-table cuisine by sourcing the highest quality, environmentally friendly ingredients to meld the joy of dining with the power of community.

Chef’s Table: Legends is the culmination of everything the franchise has worked so tirelessly to build; it brings the heart and soul of each chef to the screen with finesse. Through documentary-style storytelling, interviews with notable guests, and archival footage fueled by a lively score, we watch how every little detail of their journeys has been woven into their food—and how they use their expertise to make the world a better place.

Every shot of them working makes it clear just how many years of dedication and care they put into their craft, inspiring everyone around them to rise to their level. And the delectable cinematography brings their unique blends of flavors and cuisines to the screen with vibrant clarity. It’s so tantalizing you can almost taste it. Each episode paints a rich tapestry of the community each chef surrounds themselves with; food is so often what brings people together and this show never forgets that.

But the heart of this show, as always, lies in the space that is held for the chefs to tell their stories in their own words. Whether you’ve followed their rise to fame or you’re just meeting them for the first time, Chef’s Table: Legends gives a candid and sincere glimpse into the lives of these chefs and what made them rise above.

Watch Chef’s Table: Legends on Netflix on April 28.
