Who did Alex Cross Better?

In the high-stakes crime fiction battle, one contender stands tall: Alex Cross. Crafted by James Patterson, Cross has become a champion of the genre. A forensic psychologist and detective, he is a virtuoso, using his intellect and intuition to take down the most baffling cases. But what makes him truly magnetic? His humanity. A single father, a devoted grandson, a man of deep emotions. Cross’s ability to grapple with his inner demons while facing off against the darkest elements of society is why readers root for him. His tales are a combination of suspense, action, and raw emotion, making readers cheer for him and executing a stranglehold on every page. But when it comes to adaptations, as Patterson reminds us, “Sometimes the greatest act of bravery is simply refusing to give up.” Which means Hollywood is brave beyond belief.

The transition from page to screen is a challenge that would make even the toughest fighter tap out. How do you capture that Alex Cross gravitas, wit, and swagger in less time, with cinematic visuals, but without losing his essence? The onscreen Cross should mirror the same depth—the same blend of steel and silk—as the novels. Like a pro wrestler, the right actor can electrify audiences and make them chant Alex Cross’ name. “CROSS, CROSS, CROSS, CROSS!” Bringing Cross to the screen isn’t just about spectacle; it’s about recognizing and recreating the reasons the fans love the character.

In the cinematic arena of Alex Cross, three gladiators have stepped up to the challenge: Morgan Freeman, Tyler Perry, and the newest contender, Aldis Hodge. Each actor brings their unique gimmick, AKA their on-screen persona, to the role adding dimension by playing various sides. As they grapple with the complexities of Cross’, these actors must maintain kayfabe1, convincing the audience they are the most authentic. So tonight, today, wherever you are, right here right now: RIOTUS presents a three-man cage match for the Alex Cross championship belt. Who will emerge victorious in this ultimate showdown of acting prowess? Which man has the fortitude, the aura, and the charisma to claim the title of the definitive Alex Cross?

The Freeman Factor

Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross

Stepping into the ring first is Morgan Freeman, who portrayed Alex Cross in “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider“, Freeman’s Cross is like an MMA fighter who relies on his intelligence and emotional depth to take down opponents. His strengths lie in his ability to convey both intelligence and vulnerability, making him a relatable character despite the dark themes of the films. However, like any fighter, Freeman’s Cross has his weaknesses. His films pulled in mixed reviews, with fans & critics pointing out significant plot holes and a lack of coherence. Despite these flaws, Freeman’s performance was top-tier, bringing depth to the character and elevating the material even when the scripts faltered. His special skill? The sense of humanity Freeman gives the character. Making Cross’s pursuit of justice against cunning criminals all the more compelling.

The Perry Pivot

Tyler Perry as Alex Cross

Next up is Tyler Perry, who took on the role of Alex Cross in the 2012 film “Alex Cross.” Perry’s Cross is like a character in a game who has leveled up in action skills but lost some points in the psychological thriller aspects. His strengths lie in his physicality and action-oriented approach, bringing a new dimension to the character. However, this shift in focus was also a weakness, as it diverged from the character’s usual psychological depth. Despite this, Perry’s performance surprised, showcasing his versatility as an actor. His special skill? The intensity and urgency he brings to the character. Making Cross’s battles against his adversaries more kinetic and intense.

The Aldis Ascendancy

Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross

Now the new contender, Aldis Hodge, steps into the role of Alex Cross in the new 8-episode Prime Video series CROSS. Hodge’s Cross is like an MMA fighter trained in multiple disciplines, bringing a fresh perspective to the character. As I wrote in my review for RogerEbert.com, his strength is his ability to exude “charm combined with depth and versatility, allowing him to pivot from smiles to rage with equal believability. Those qualities could have seen him lead a franchise as the DC Comics hero Hawkman. Instead, they make him a match for Alex Cross.”  The Hodge version of Alex Cross grapples with the character’s complexities, showcasing his razor-sharp intellect and deep emotional vulnerabilities, but also brings a commanding physical presence to the role that aligns with Patterson’s original vision.

The long-form TV format is another bonus, giving Hodge the space to capture Cross’s complex family life and personal struggles, adding a new dimensionality to the character. However, as with any contender, there are challenges. The series layers storylines, a departure from the direct adaptations of the past, and for some the shadow of Morgan Freeman’s portrayal might loom too large. Despite these challenges, Hodge’s is the most comprehensive interpretation of Cross yet. His special skill? The authenticity, nuance, and full-blown allure he gives the character. Making Cross’s journey all the more engaging.

The Verdict

In this adaptation, Hodge doesn’t just step out of the shadows of his predecessors; he leaps off the top rope for the pin, delivering the most compelling and fully realized embodiment of Alex Cross to date. While Freeman and Perry gave unique interpretations of the character, Hodge’s nuanced portrayal captures the essence of Alex Cross. There’s no beating his ability to balance the character’s professional tenacity, intimidating physicality, and personal vulnerability. Those factors combined lead to one true king of the Alex Cross Arena, the crown and the belt go to Aldis Hodge.
