Hello, hello! Welcome to another GGR Hallmark Journal installment!
Day and Renee are giving quick little reviews for some of the Hallmark movies coming out this year. And we will review some cookies along the way too, because what is better than tea and cookies and a Christmas movie?
Day: Soooo, today’s viewing was Holiday Mismatch. I-I-I’m not quite sure what to say-
Renee: WAHHHHH! I really wanted this one to work for me, but it just didn’t. Everything seemed right, the cast looked great — the premise was new and different — and guess what, I was bored. WAHHHHH!!!!
Day *offering Renee a tissue*: Holiday Mismatch sees the aunts (Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick) from Sabrina the Teenage Witch reunite as mothers trying to bring love into the lives of their children.
Renee: They have a rivalry around the best way to organize a holiday event and straight up hate the idea of their kids together. Unleash the meddling mothers!
Sadly, while everything seems great…I was bored, did I mention I was bored? Some of the edits were downright strange – so much so that I looked at Day and said, “What was that?”
Day: To which my response was, “Sorry, I missed it. I was distracted by my phone.” What should have been witty reparte between two talented actresses who have worked together for years, the dialogue felt clunky.
Renee: And while the rivalry was fun-
Day: I don’t know. The way they sniped at each other just sounded rude rather than a humorous rivalry that would be amusing in its one-up-man-ship that we usually see in these kinds of movies. They just sounded mean.
Renee: I think that was the problem. There wasn’t as much of a friendship story brewing between the mothers, and we needed that friendship to take space in the narrative because we were only seeing the highlights of the love story in the background. I really loved the chemistry between the kids.
Day: Yeah, Jon McLaren and Maxine Denis. I really liked their interactions.
Renee: They were really cute, but it just wasn’t enough to hold me, sadly. I give it a “didn’t live up to expectations” two out of three cookies.
In expectation of today’s film we selected Stash’s Double Spice Chai. 🙂 It seemed fitting for Caroline and Beth’s spicy back-and-forths. And we grabbed some Triple Ginger Snaps from Trader Joe’s — if you haven’t tried these, they are the BEST ginger cookies on the market! Perfect with chai!
