It is the most wonderful time of the year – Hallmark Holiday Movie Time!!!! And this is Day and Renee’s GGR Hallmark Journal where we try and offer some insights and quick little reviews for some of those movies. And we will also review some cookies along the way because what goes better with a Christmas movie than tea and cookies?
Day: In Scouting for Christmas, Angela (Tamera Mowry-Housley), a single mom with a complicated and very busy life finds love when she partners with her daughter Brooklyn’s (Audrey Wise Alvarez) favorite baker (Carlo Marks) to try and cater the Holiday Ball.
Renee: This was a super cute movie! I really liked it a lot! There was a lot of heart in this one, and a very real portrayal of a busy mom with a loving child. Too often, in these movies, the kids are just plot points…they show up every once in a while to stir the pot, but mostly they are off screen with other relatives. Not this one! Brooklyn was a key part to this story, and Alvarez did a great job pulling her weight.
Day: So why isn’t it 5 cookies?
Renee: Well, there was weirdness with the mother/daughter relationship…she’s old enough to run off and hang out with friends but her mom still puts on her pjs??? It feels like the daughter should have been cast much younger. Also, the family relationships are really complicated…overly so. BUT these little things shouldn’t stop you from watching it tonight when it airs again!!!! Final score – 4 cookies!
Day: Tonight’s cookie was OF COURSE, girl scout cookies! We pulled out the Lemon Ups. They are wonderful — delightfully lemony without being overpoweringly tart or cloyingly sweet. They are the perfect little cookie to drink with sweet tea! Tonight’s tea was, Taylors of Harrogate’s Spiced Christmas tea. Their description captures it perfectly, with “black Congou tea leaves for their smooth, mellow taste and gently blended then with orange and lemon peel, cinnamon pieces and decorative safflower petals, for a deeply-flavoured winter warmer.”
