Dragons? Check. A mysterious warrior who shows up to save a small medieval village? Check. A plucky heroine with a big heart? Check! Quality Assurance in Another World has all the makings of a great fantasy adventure. But here’s the twist: The world is actually a VR game. Wait, what?
Okay, we’d better start again. Haga is a real-life QA debugger who is stuck inside a VR game, doomed to play as a noble warrior who seeks out a rogue dragon that has bugged out, no matter how many times he fails. That is, until one of the game’s NPCs named Nikola decides to see what lies beyond her village. Worlds collide as Nikola and Haga realize they’re both searching for something more than their pre-determined fates. Hijinks await!
Based on the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masamichi Sato, Quality Assurance in Another World immediately yanks you by the collar and shoves you into a fantastical realm of monstrous mystery. The animation is rustic and whimsical, cementing the old world setting, complete with fun maps and “loading screens” detailing the monsters on the show as if it were a real video game.
By the end of the first episode, the emotional stakes have laid the groundwork for some pretty meta threats from other debuggers and bugs alike. In between, there are plenty of giggles to keep your heart invested as Haga teaches Nikola what it means to be a debugger…within the realm of her existence, that is. They even meet some more misfits to expand their worldview and deepen the strength of their journey along the way. The unlikely group adventure is a tried and tested trope and, in terms of quality assurance, this show certainly delivers.
