PBS ‘Renegades’ Roundtable: Breaking Barriers, Making History — Untold Stories of Disabled Renegades

Renegades is a new digital series of five documentary short films showcasing the lives and cultural contributions of little-known historical figures with disabilities, hosted by award-winning musician and disability rights champion Lachi. Over October, Geek Girl Riot hosted the Renegades Aftershow, offering insights from the Directors and Writers of the individual episodes as well as show secrets.

Making PBS Sexy
Tonight, we have the opportunity to talk to the folks behind the series as a whole: Executive Producer Charlotte Mangin, Series Producer Amanda Upson, Producer and Researcher Ryan Camarda, Renegades’ host Lachi, and of course, yours truly, Day Al-Mohamed. And where do we start but with: How to make PBS sexy….

Money and Disability in Film
Moving on from there, we dig into a little more about the money in disability. Yep. Diversity and inclusion is great but it is also good business. And we get to hear a little bit about that. Goodness knows I would love more listeners.

Secrets
And of course our closing segment has got to be about secrets and Ryan Camarda gives a little more inside scoop on the connection between Renegades and The Princess Bride

Whether you’re someone with a disability or other marginalization looking for a little inspiration from the past, or just someone looking for stories of real life badassery, this is probably the series for you. And at about 10 minutes per episode, it’s an easy yes.
